I picked this 2004 Specialized Enduro Comp up in May of 2004, after being inspired to begin seriously mountain biking again after a ride in Hawaii.

THINGS I’VE REPLACED

Front Wheel - The Stout Skraxle or whatever Specialized calls it is horrible. A Skraxle supposedly acts as both a quick release skewer and an axle. What it really does is give you a quick release that may come loose at any moment. It also acts as a quick release that doesn’t allow you to maintain consistent clamping pressure on your fork legs, which will give you brake disc rotor rub hell.

I changed the front wheel to a Mavic 717 32h disc rim laced to a WTB Laserlite hub, which uses a conventional quick release skewer. Brake disc rotor rub hell is gone.

Rear Wheel - The original XT hub went bad. I guess I didn’t treat it well enough. The wheel started wobbling side to side, and the cassette engagement was sketchy.

Replaced with a Mavic 717 32h disc rim laced to a new Shimano XT rear hub.

Chain - I bent the hell out of a few links. Not sure if it was just the chain getting old or my ungraceful shifting. Chain is now a Shimano Dura Ace/XTR CN-7701 9 speed chain.

Rear Tire - The original tire wore out. I replaced it with a WTB Mutano Raptor Race 2.4. Great tire for So Cal hardpack. Definitely sketchy in mud though so just watch out in the wet winter months.

Front Fork - Replaced the Manitou with a Fox Float 130 RLC. The Float is much stiffer and better at small bump absorption than the Manitou was.

  1. Great bike. I have the same one and still love it. Some friends say I need to step up and go new and some say stick with the enduro “it’s a classic.”
